THE SIZE-WEIGHT ILLUSION
This project grew out of a number of creative experiments in haptic illusions exploring anomalies and loopholes in our perception of touch. The most interesting of these experiments was the ‘Size-Weight’ illusion, which became a predecessor to the Weight Illusion project. This illusion causes us to perceive a small object as much heavier than a larger object of the same weight.
What began with the success of two crudely constructed boxes of card and masking-tape packed with fishing sinkers became an obsession that resulted in over 40 laser cut and 3D printed prototypes exploring size, weight, shape, colour, texture, and surface area.
